The best time to visit Bhimtal

Bhimtal is worth a visit all year, and each season is a different trip. October and November bring the clearest skies; March to June the warm days and the holiday crowds; July to September the rain and the greenest hills; December to February cold, quiet days.

October and November: clear skies

After the monsoon the air clears: the best months for views of the hills and, from Ramgarh and Mukteshwar, the Himalaya. Days are mild and nights are cool, so bring a warm layer.

March to June: warm days, busy weekends

Spring and summer are pleasant in the hills while the plains are hot, so this is the busiest time, above all in the May and June school holidays. Book early, and start day trips early to miss the traffic.

July to September: rain and green hills

The monsoon turns the hills green and the lakes full, and the town is quieter. Some days are wet all day, and heavy rain can slow or close hill roads for a while: check the weather before you drive up, and leave room in your plans.

December to February: cold, quiet days

Winter days are often sunny and the nights cold; pack properly warm clothes. Snow is uncommon in Bhimtal itself but falls on the higher ridges, such as Mukteshwar, in some years. The house has hot water and heating, and it is a good season for a longer, quieter stay.

Dates that fill up first

Long weekends, festivals, the summer school holidays and the New Year fill up first, here and everywhere in the hills. Kainchi Dham’s foundation day, 15 June, brings very large crowds and slow roads around Bhowali.
